UMCP/UMSON Guaranteed Admission Pathway

University of Maryland College Park and the University of Maryland School of Nursing offer a guaranteed admission pathway that will streamline progression from UMCP to University of Maryland School of Nursing allowing students to earn a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) in as few as four years. This program guarantees admission to the University of Maryland School of Nursing for eligible applicants upon successful completion of Phase I of the admissions pathway. 

Successful Completion of Phase I:

1.     Completion of 59 pre-requisite credits at University of Maryland School of Nursing
2.     Minimum Overall GPA 3.25
3.     Minimum Science GPA 3.0 and no grade below B- i any of the following (General Chemistry I, Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology I, and Anatomy and Physiology II). 

Additional Eligibility Requirements:   

  • Students must be admitted to University of Maryland College Park as true Freshman in either the Fall or Spring semesters. 
  • Students must declare their intent to enter into the Nursing Pathway by meeting Ms. Alicia Thomas. Eligible students will have their codes changed after successful completion of 45 credits. Ms. Thomas can be reached at athomas4@umd.edu.

Q: How does the pathway work exactly?

Students invited into this pathway will begin their academic experience at University of Maryland College Park. Upon successful completion of the 59 credit sequence of courses students will leave University of Maryland College Park and progress to University of Maryland School of Nursing (either Baltimore or Shady Grove).

Q: If I accept admission into this program and successfully complete all the requirements to matriculate to the School of Nursing, do I then need to apply?

No. If you complete all the requirements, you are guaranteed admission to the School of Nursing.

Q: I’m confused; I start at University of Maryland College Park but will not finish there?

That is correct. Once you progress to University of Maryland School of Nursing, you are no longer a student at University of Maryland College Park. University of Maryland School of Nursing will confer your BSN degree.

Q: I understand that the School of Nursing has two campuses, one in Baltimore and one at the Universities at Shady Grove. Which one will I attend?

This is an individual choice. Before you matriculate to the School of Nursing, you may select which campus you prefer.

Q: Can I Study Abroad?

While at University of Maryland College Park, individuals may choose to Study Abroad. The decision to study abroad may affect the semester in which a student matriculates into University of Maryland School of Nursing.

Q: What if I earn less than a B- in my required science coursework? Can I remain in the pathway?

Students may retake required science coursework in order to meet the minimum accepted grade. Keep in mind that University of Maryland School of Nursing will average the grades of all attempts in a course. Students may stay in the pathway for three years in order to complete Nursing School pre-requisites. Multiple unsuccessful attempts at the pre-requisite coursework are likely to jeopardize your overall GPA and science GPA rendering you non-competitive. Advisors will work closely with students on this.

Q: What if I want to stay three years at University of Maryland College Park or it takes me more than four semesters to complete the requirements for nursing school?

Students normally matriculate to the School of Nursing within 4 semesters. However, in order to be part of this guaranteed program, students must matriculate within three years.

Q: What if I decided I want to stay at University of Maryland College Park all four years?

If you decide to stay at University of Maryland College Park all four years they you will have to choose a major offered at University of Maryland College Park and you will not be guaranteed admission to University of Maryland School of Nursing. You may, however, apply on your own to the Nursing school.

Q: How do I become a part of this program? Do I need to formally change my major?

Once you’ve decided that you want to enroll in the pathway, please email LEP@umd.edu to indicate that you want to enroll in the pathway. At that time, your major will be changed to nursing.

Q: I have a substantial number of credits from High School (AP, IB, community college while in High School) and only need three semesters to complete my nursing school requirements. Can I go to UM School of Nursing early?

You may matriculate early to University of Maryland School of Nursing provided space is available in that cohort.

Q: Can I still be a part of the Honors College, or College Park Scholars, or other living and learning program if I’ve been invited to participate?

Yes. The College Park Scholars citation will appear on your University of Maryland College Park transcript after four semesters. Your Honors College citation will appear upon completion of the program. If you progress to University of Maryland School of Nursing before completing your Honors College requirements, the citation will not appear on your transcript.

Q: Can I still live at University of Maryland College Park even after I go to Nursing School?

Because you will no longer be a student at University of Maryland College Park, you will not be allowed to live in on-campus housing. Of course you could remain in the city of College Park and live in any of the off- campus housing options.
