Medical and Research Technology
What is Medical and Research Technology?
The Department of Medical and Research Technology at the University of
Maryland Baltimore is an independent department within the School of
Medicine offering a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical and Research
Technology. Students may choose from two tracks of learning: the Medical
Technology Track, or the Biomedical Science Research Track. Students
must complete 60 credit hours of required courses before transferring
to the program.
Students who enter either as a medical technologist or as a biomedical
science researcher have career opportunities in clinical laboratories
in hospitals, medical centers, reference laboratories and physician's
office laboratories. They also have the opportunity to work in research
laboratories basic and applied in academic institutions, National Institutes
of Health and other government laboratories. The degree also offers the
opportunity to work in the biotechnology industries and pharmaceutical
companies.

Educational
Requirements
A Baccalaureate degree program for a Bachelor's of Science in Medical
and Research Technology is a 2+2 program. Students complete 2 years of
prerequisite courses at an accredited college or university and then
apply for admission to a professional school to complete 2 years of professional
coursework, which includes classroom, laboratory, and clinical education.
Admission to professional schools is competitive and is not guaranteed
by the University of Maryland. Contact programs for most current requirements.
NOTE: Pre-Medical and Research Technology is not a degree-granting program
at University of Maryland, College Park.
