Helpful Hints for Preparing an Effective Letter of Recommendation

To whom do I address the letter?
In the letter, include the date, student's name, and the salutation:
"Dear Committee on Admissions:"

What is important to cover in the letter?
The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has provided Guidelines for Writing a Letter of Evaluation for a Medical School Applicant. These guidelines are applicable for writing letters for students applying to either Medical or Dental School. Please keep these suggestions in mind as you write letters for applicants.

What is the appropriate format?
Professional schools require that letters be submitted on official letterhead, signed, and dated.

Here are your options for creating the document:
1. You can print the letter on letterhead, sign it, scan it to a PDF and attach it to the veCollect email.
2. You can create an "image" of your letterhead and an "image" of your signature using a scanner. You then insert the images into the appropriate place in your letter.
3. You can also create a "master" recommendation document with the images into which you type your recommendation letter.
