What is Dental Hygiene?
A Dental Hygienist is a licensed preventive oral
health professional who provides educational, clinical, and therapeutic
services to the public. In addition to carrying out clinical responsibilities
such as scaling and polishing teeth, hygienists help patients develop
and maintain good oral health.

Pre-Dental Hygiene is not a degree-granting
program at the University of Maryland, College
Park
A Baccalaureate degree program for a Bachelor's of Science in Dental
Hygiene (BS-DH) is a 2+2 program. Students complete 2 years of
prerequisite courses at the University of Maryland and
then apply for admission to a professional school to complete
2 years of professional coursework, which includes classroom,
laboratory, and clinical education. Admission to professional
schools is competitive and is not guaranteed by the University
